10 Health Hacks for Busy Moms
As moms, we’re the glue that holds everything together—family schedules, meal plans, and endless to-do lists. But let’s be honest: when life gets busy, our own health often takes a backseat. As a functional medicine practitioner and fellow busy mom, I know how hard it can be to stay healthy amidst the chaos but it’s time to put your health and wellness back on the to-do list so that you can thrive! Health hacks for busy moms doesn’t have to be complicated or cost a lot of money, focusing on the basics can do wonders for our health!
Here are 10 health hacks for busy moms to help you thrive, even on your busiest days or seasons:
- Start Your Day with Protein: Swap sugary breakfasts and coffees for a protein-packed option like eggs, a smoothie with protein powder or Greek yogurt with berries. A high-protein breakfast stabilizes blood sugar and gives you lasting energy.
- Drink Water Before Coffee: Hydration first! Drinking a glass of water (up-level by adding electrolytes) before your morning coffee helps kickstart digestion, flush toxins, and boost energy.
- Plan Dinners for Simplicity: Keep weeknight meals simple. Think one-pan dinners, slow cooker soups, or sheet pan veggies with a protein. Pre-chopped veggies or frozen options are lifesavers during busy weeks. Pro tip: make enough for leftovers that way you have dinner or lunch for the next day without extra prep or planning!
- Move in Microbursts: You don’t need a 60-minute workout to feel great. Squeeze in 20 minute strength sessions or a 15 minute brisk walk while the kids are at soccer practice or after dinner as a family. Even 5 minutes of stretching can do wonders for energy levels and mental clarity!
- Prep Snacks for the Week: Stock up on healthy, grab-and-go snacks like nuts, boiled eggs, veggies and hummus, fruit and cheese or high quality beef sticks. This keeps you fueled and reduces the temptation to grab a processed, higher glycemic option options.
- Get Outside Daily: Even five minutes of fresh air can do wonders for your mood and stress levels. Take the kids for a walk, do yard work, or just sit on the porch. Even better, get out first thing in the morning when the sun is rising to set your circadian rhythm for the day!
- Set a Non-Negotiable Bedtime: Your sleep is sacred. Aim for at least 7 hours, and make it a non-negotiable. Create a calming bedtime routine—think herbal tea, a warm bath, or journaling after the kids go to bed to lull you into a good night sleep!
- Batch Tasks: Streamline your day by batching tasks. For example, prep lunches for the week on Sunday or even chop up a few extra veggies while you are making dinner for snacks or salads for the week! Designate one day for errands instead of spreading them out. The less our brains have to shift tasks, the more efficient we can be.
- Say “No” More Often: Your time and energy are precious. Practice saying no to commitments that don’t serve your priorities or align with your values, especially during busy seasons. This may be one of the top health hacks for busy moms, sometimes it’s not about what we are doing but what we are not doing that will support our health the most!
- Breathe Through Stress: When overwhelm hits, pause and take five deep belly breaths – my favorite is 4-7-8 breathing – more on mindfulness HERE. It only takes a moment, but it can reset your nervous system and help you think clearly.
Being a healthy, energized mom doesn’t mean perfection. It’s about finding small, manageable steps that fit into your life. I hope at least one of these health hacks for busy moms resonates with you and you will implement this week!
