BTW, You Can Do Both: Finding Balance in Your Health and Wellness Journey

Somewhere along the way, health and wellness started to feel like an all-or-nothing game and sometimes it can feel like a full time job.

Buy all organic. Eliminate every possible toxin. Take every supplement you see on Instagram. Track your macros. Get your steps in. Strength train. Prioritize sleep. Optimize your hormones. And whatever you do, don’t forget your 10 step morning routine.

Sound familiar?

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve been on both ends of the health and wellness pendulum. About 10 years ago, I was a version of “healthy” where I followed a slightly healthier version of the SAD diet, aka Standard American Diet, drank a glass of wine most nights of the week, and didn’t really prioritize my mental and spiritual health. Then I started training in Functional Medicine and the pendulum swung the other way. I went down the rabbit holes of researching ingredients, swapping out products, following strict protocols, and trying to make every aspect of my life as healthy as possible. And while much of that came from a genuine desire to take care of my health (and my family’s health!), I’ve also learned that sometimes the pursuit of health and wellness can become stressful in itself.

Here’s what I’ve come to believe is most true: You can care deeply about your health without making your entire life revolve around it.

You can buy organic when it makes sense AND not stress about eating conventional produce.

You can prioritize non-toxic skincare AND enjoy the occasional product that doesn’t meet your usual standards.

You can eat nutrient-dense foods, prioritize protein, and support your gut health AND enjoy pizza night with your family.

You can follow a thoughtful supplement routine AND recognize that you don’t need 17 different supplements to be healthy.

You can prioritize strength training, recovery, and sleep AND take a day off without feeling guilty (and you should!).

You can care about longevity, hormones, and reducing environmental exposures AND stop trying to control every single thing.

Because here’s the thing: Health isn’t built through perfection. It’s built through consistent habits over time.

One meal, one missed workout, one late night, or one less-than-perfect ingredient isn’t going to make or break your health. What matters much more is what you do consistently and how those habits fit into your life long-term.

This is also how I approach functional medicine at Well North. I believe in understanding the body, identifying underlying imbalances, and being thoughtful about nutrition, hormones, supplements, and environmental exposures. But I also believe that your health plan should support your life, not take it over. I work with busy moms, working women, and families juggling all of life’s stressful demands, the last thing you need is your health and wellness routine to stress you out.

Sometimes the best thing we can do for our health is add something. Other times, and more often I’m finding, it’s simplify, let go of unnecessary rules, and give ourselves a little more flexibility.

The goal isn’t to live a perfectly optimized life. It’s to build a healthy life that you actually enjoy living.

So, a little reminder: You don’t have to choose between being healthy and enjoying your life.

BTW, you can do both.
