Holiday Gut Health: 7 Simple Ways to Keep Your Digestive System Happy (and Avoid the Bloat)
The holiday season is full of joy, family, and way too much sugar, alcohol, rich foods, and stress. While celebrating the season is wonderful, our gut microbiome often pays the price. Bloating, fatigue, irregular bowel movements, and even mood swings can follow if we don’t give our digestive system a little love during this season.
The good news? You don’t have to deprive yourself to stay balanced. Here are my top 7 tips for holiday gut health, to keep you going all season long, without sacrificing your favorite holiday treats!
1. Start Your Day with a Gut-Loving Rituals
Even on busy holiday mornings, take 5 minutes for your gut:
- Drink warm lemon water or apple-cider-vinegar water (1 tbsp ACV in 8–10 oz water)
- Eat a fiber-rich, protein-packed breakfast (think eggs with avocado and sautéed greens or a smoothie with berries, spinach, collagen/protein, and flaxseed)
2. Prioritize Fermented Foods Daily
Fermented foods are nature’s probiotics. Aim for at least one serving a day, but the more the merrier for optimal holiday gut health (and make it festive!):
- Sauerkraut or kimchi on the side of your meal
- A Greek yogurt parfait with seasonal fruit – pomegranate seeds (also great for your gut!)
- Swap an alcoholic beverage for Kombucha (use as a festive mocktail base!)
3. Move Your Body
Movement stimulates peristalsis (aka the wave-like motion that keeps things moving through your intestines). Even a 10–20 minute post-meal walk after holiday dinners works wonders. Bonus: it also helps regulate blood sugar after carb-heavy meals and dessert!
4. Mind the Sugar & Alcohol Combo
Sugar feeds opportunistic bacteria and yeast; alcohol irritates the gut lining and disrupts the microbiome. You don’t have to abstain completely, and miss out on your favorite holiday treats in the name of gut health but:
- Alternate alcoholic drinks with sparkling water or a festive mocktail
- Choose lower-sugar options (dry wine, tequila/soda with lime, or vodka water)
- For optimal holiday gut health: consider taking a high-quality probiotic (a few of my favorites are linked here on FULLSCRIPT) and 500–1000 mg vitamin C before drinking to support liver detox pathways
5. Load Up on Prebiotic Fiber
Prebiotic fiber feeds your good bacteria. Sneak them in any way you can for holiday gut health:
- Bring a veggie tray with guacamole or hummus
- Roast Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, or root veggies as sides
- Add chia or flax seeds to holiday desserts or morning oats for added fiber
6. Manage Stress — Your Gut Feels Everything
Stress directly impacts vagus nerve function and gut motility. Try:
- 4-7-8 breathing (inhale 4, hold 7, exhale 8) before meals
- A 5-minute gratitude practice or prayer
- Magnesium glycinate at night to calm the nervous system and support regular bowel movements
7. Practice the 80/20 rule
You don’t have to be picture perfect in terms of health and eating through the holiday season but my philosophy is: if you can do well 80% of the time, we should leave room for treats and enjoying the season without stress or guilt! If you know you have a weekend full of parties and events, prioritize eating healthy meals at home during the week, having a healthy breakfast or lunch before you head to out the festivities and do your best! Health doesn’t have to be perfect and don’t let one day of indulgence derail your overall health goals!
Make holiday gut health a priority
You can enjoy holiday treats and traditions without sacrificing your gut health and feeling bloated all month long. Small, consistent habits — a daily fermented food, a post-dinner walk, staying hydrated, and managing stress can really make a big difference.
Your microbiome will thank you in January when everyone else is struggling with the “holiday hangover.”
