A Functional Medicine Approach to Postpartum Wellness
A Functional Medicine Approach to Postpartum Wellness
This is an area I am endlessly passionate about and have no had the opportunity to work with dozens of postpartum moms to create a personalized functional medicine approach to postpartum wellness for each one! This postpartum period is often described as the “fourth trimester,” a critical phase where new mothers navigate the physical, emotional, and mental challenges of recovery. While much focus is placed on prenatal care, postpartum wellness can sometimes be overlooked. This is where functional medicine steps in, offering a comprehensive and holistic approach to postpartum wellness that focuses on the root causes of health imbalances, rather than just treating symptoms. One of my biggest pet peeves is when I hear some say, “you’re just a new mom, its normal to feel <tired, anxious, stressed, foggy, etc…>”
In this weeks blog, I will explore with you how a functional medicine approach to postpartum wellness can support new moms in healing after childbirth, enhancing overall wellness during this transformative time to set you up for lifelong health.
Common Postpartum Health Challenges
After childbirth, a woman’s body undergoes significant physical, emotional, and hormonal changes. Some common postpartum challenges include:
- Hormonal imbalances (e.g., postpartum thyroiditis, estrogen/progesterone fluctuations)
- Nutrient deficiencies (due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, or blood loss during delivery)
- Mental health concerns (such as postpartum depression or anxiety)
- Sleep deprivation and fatigue
- Inflammation and immune system dysregulation
- Digestive issues
Functional medicine addresses these challenges by providing individualized care that supports the body’s natural healing processes and fosters overall well-being.
A Functional Medicine Approach to Postpartum Wellness
- Hormonal Balance: The postpartum period is marked by a dramatic shift in hormone levels, particularly estrogen, progesterone, and oxytocin. These changes can contribute to mood swings, fatigue, night sweats, vaginal dryness and even postpartum depression and anxiety. A holistic approach to postpartum wellness assesses the entire hormonal landscape, not just reproductive hormones, but also adrenal function and thyroid health. For example, postpartum thyroiditis, a condition that affects some new mothers, can lead to thyroid imbalances that go undiagnosed. By restoring balance through diet, stress management, and, where necessary, hormone support, we can help stabilize mood and energy levels.
- Nutritional Support: Pregnancy and breastfeeding place enormous demands on moms nutritional reserves, and many new mothers face nutrient deficiencies in the postpartum period. Key nutrients like iron, B vitamins, magnesium, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids can become depleted, impacting energy levels, mental clarity, and mood. A functional medicine approach emphasizes replenishing these nutrients through diet and targeted supplementation. For example:
- Iron: Crucial for energy and replenishing blood lost during childbirth.
- B vitamins: Important for energy production, mood stabilization and preventing postpartum depression.
- Omega-3 fatty acids: Known to support brain health and reduce inflammation.
- Magnesium: Helps combat stress, muscle tension and improve sleep quality.
- Zinc: Supports mood, skin and hair health as well as hormones.

By addressing nutritional deficiencies, functional medicine helps new mothers recover faster and feel more energized. At Wild Rice Wellness, I work with patients on personalized nutrition and supplement plans to make sure they are getting everything they need to keep the body optimized.
- Gut and Immune Health: Childbirth and the postpartum period can impact gut health due to stress, hormonal changes, and in some cases, antibiotics used during labor. A healthy gut is crucial for digestion, nutrient absorption, immune function, and even mood regulation, given the gut-brain connection. Functional medicine places great importance on restoring gut health postpartum, which can involve:
- Addressing any imbalances in gut bacteria (dysbiosis).
- Supporting digestive function with probiotics, prebiotics, and digestive enzymes.
- Identifying and eliminating potential food sensitivities or inflammatory foods that may contribute to fatigue, inflammation, or mood disturbances.
- Enhancing the diversity of the microbiome through nutritional strategies
This gut-centered approach helps new mothers avoid common postpartum issues like bloating, constipation, or fatigue, while also supporting the immune system during a time of recovery.
- Mental and Emotional Health: The emotional toll of postpartum life can be overwhelming, especially when coupled with sleep deprivation, hormonal shifts, and the stress of caring for a newborn. Conditions like postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety affect many new mothers, yet conventional treatments often focus only on antidepressants or short-term interventions. Functional medicine takes a more holistic approach to mental health, identifying underlying causes such as nutrient deficiencies (e.g., vitamin D or omega-3s), gut imbalances, or thyroid dysfunction. Stress reduction techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, and breathing exercises are integrated into a treatment plan, along with natural mood support through nutrition, supplementation, and lifestyle adjustments. And I always recommend seeing a perinatal mental health therapist – it can truly work wonders on coping with the stress and transition of new motherhood. We are lucky to have so many locally here in the Denver area!
- Restoring Energy and Managing Fatigue: Fatigue is perhaps the most common complaint during the postpartum period. Our bodies are healing from childbirth, adjusting to hormonal shifts, and coping with sleep deprivation. Add in the challenge of breastfeeding and any number of blips that can occur in early postpartum and it is no wonder this is the most common thing I hear from moms. Functional medicine seeks to understand the root causes of extreme fatigue, whether it’s due to thyroid imbalances, adrenal fatigue, nutrient deficiencies, or blood sugar instability. By focusing on adrenal health, balancing blood sugar through diet, supporting overall energy production at the cellular level, and focusing on getting restorative sleep when we are able to, a functional medicine approach to wellness can help new mothers regain their energy.
- Supporting Breastfeeding and Lactation: Breastfeeding requires increased nutritional demands, especially for key nutrients like calcium and omega-3s, as well as hydration. I help moms to optimize their diet for breastfeeding by providing tailored nutritional advice to ensure adequate milk supply, prevent nutrient depletion, and support both mother and baby’s health. Herbal support is also commonly used in functional medicine to promote milk production and provide nourishment during breastfeeding. I love providing the moms I work with, with recipes that help with lactation and are easy to prep and store for those post-nursing session surges in hunger and thirst.
- Holistic Approach to Healing: Above all, functional medicine is about treating the individual as a whole. During the postpartum period, this might mean addressing not only physical recovery but also emotional well-being, the demands of motherhood, and lifestyle factors. As a mom of two, who had dealt with my own postpartum health challenges, I love working with moms of any stage to develop a personalized plan that could include dietary changes, supplements, stress management techniques, medications and referrals to other experts to enhance their postpartum wellness.
