A Holistic Approach to Fertility

A Holistic Approach to Fertility

A Holistic Approach to Fertility

In recent years, more couples have struggled with fertility challenges than ever before. Today women in their 20s are less fertile than their grandmothers were when they were 35-40. 1 in 5 couples in the US struggle with fertility. 10-20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage (this number is likely higher). And male sperm counts have dropped more than 50% since 1973.

This may sound bleak but I am a firm believe that there are so many things we can do to improve fertility. Functional medicine is well suited to take a holistic approach to fertility and help improve health along the way. This week’s blog delves into how functional medicine addresses fertility, offering a pathway to support couples in their journey to conception that goes beyond conventional medicine and IVF because there is truly so much more to explore!

Common Fertility Challenges

Infertility can arise from various factors, both in men and women. Some of the most common include:

    •  Hormonal imbalances like with PCOS. Luteal phase deficiency, and thyroid dysfunction
    •  Nutritional deficiencies
    •  Environmental toxins
    •  Stress and emotional health
    •  Gut dysbiosis or increased intestinal permeability
    •  Poor egg or sperm quality

Functional medicine aims to address these challenges by focusing on whole person wellness!

How can we improve fertility?

      1. Hormonal Balance: Hormones play a critical role in fertility, and even minor imbalances can make conception difficult. We want to look at reproductive hormones and beyond – investigating how the adrenals and thyroid are functioning, stress hormones like cortisol, and insulin levels impact fertility. A key aspect of functional medicine is addressing lifestyle factors that disrupt hormonal balance, such as chronic stress, poor sleep, or an inflammatory diet. By restoring hormonal balance, functional medicine supports healthy ovulation, menstrual cycles, and optimal sperm production.

      1. Nutritional Optimization: Nutrient deficiencies can have a significant impact on reproductive health. There should be a larger focus on diet and supplementation to ensure that the body is receiving the nutrients it needs to support conception, pregnancy and thriving postpartum. For example, deficiencies in folate, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and antioxidants like CoQ10 can impair fertility.  We want to start with a diet that consists of real, whole foods, high in essential nutrients and antioxidants, to optimize egg and sperm health, improve hormonal function, and reduce inflammation.

      1. Gut Health: You might be thinking what does the gut have to do with fertility? I’m here to you – a lot actually! The gut is often overlooked in conventional fertility treatments, but it plays a vital role in overall health, including reproduction. Imbalances in the gut microbiome can lead to inflammation, poor nutrient absorption, and immune system dysfunction—all of which can affect fertility. Prior to conception we want to emphasize healing the gut by identifying food sensitivities, improving digestion, and restoring a healthy balance of gut bacteria. This helps to reduce systemic inflammation, support hormonal balance, and enhance the body’s ability to conceive.

      1. Reducing Environmental Toxins: Environmental toxins, such as pesticides, heavy metals, and chemicals found in personal care products, can disrupt hormones and negatively affect fertility. We call these endocrine disrupting chemicals for a reason! In conventional medicine this may be an overlooked area but it is vital to assess for exposures to these toxins and recommend ways to reduce or eliminate them. Detoxification protocols, which involve supporting the liver and other detox organs, can help to remove these toxins from the body, creating a healthier environment for conception. It is important to remember that during pregnancy as well as when nursing, there should not be an emphasis on detoxification. More on ways to support detoxification HERE!

      1. Stress and Emotional Health: The link between stress and infertility is well-established. Chronic stress leads to elevated cortisol levels, which can interfere with reproductive hormones and ovulation. Furthermore, the emotional toll of infertility itself can create a vicious cycle, as the pressure to conceive adds more stress to an already challenging situation. One of the core pillars of functional medicine is mental, emotional, and spiritual health which is so vital to take into consideration when looking to conceive. Even before trying to conceive incorporating mindfulness practices to get your head in a good space can do wonders. And no, it doesn’t have to be 30 minutes of meditation – it can be but mindfulness can also look like –  yoga, acupuncture, journaling, prayer, walking in nature and more!  By calming the nervous system and balancing cortisol levels, the body is more likely to enter a state conducive to conception.I cannot stress enough the importance of therapy to reduce stress and promote a sense of well-being. Working with a qualified mental health practitioner to take care of your mental and emotional health can be vital.

By addressing the root causes of infertility or simply optimizing the body before conception, functional medicine supports the body’s innate ability to conceive.
