Bloating Before Your Period? What It Means and How to Fix It

Many women and patients that I see experience bloating before their period or in the second half of their cycles, but severe bloating isn’t always just a normal part of PMS. Hormonal fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle can affect fluid balance, digestion, and inflammation. You may experience some or all of these triggers that lead to uncomfortable bloating before your period. 

Why Does Bloating Before Your Period Happen?

Several factors may contribute to bloating in the luteal or PMS phase of the cycle, including some or all of the following:

      1. Estrogen Fluctuations: Higher estrogen levels can increase water retention and leave you feeling puffy.
      2. Progesterone Changes: Progesterone naturally slows digestion. As hormone levels shift and progesterone increases, constipation and bloating can worsen.
      3. Blood Sugar Imbalances: Large swings in blood sugar can increase inflammation and contribute to fluid retention.
      4. Gut Health Concerns: Underlying gut issues such as constipation, dysbiosis, or food sensitivities may become more noticeable before your period.

How to Reduce Bloating Before Your Period

    • Prioritize protein and fiber at every meal.
    • Stay hydrated.
    • Increase potassium-rich foods such as avocado, sweet potatoes, and leafy greens.
    • Support regular bowel movements.
    • Reduce excessive sodium from processed foods.
    • Add magnesium to help with motlity
    • Consider evaluating hormone balance if symptoms are persistent.
    • Consider supplements or hormone replacement therapy if needed.
