Creating Intentional Health Goals

Creating Intentional Health Goals for the New Year

The start of a new year is a time for fresh beginnings and renewed focus on what truly matters. For many, health goals top the list—but how often do those resolutions fall by the wayside by February? The key to lasting change lies in creating intentional health goals rooted in your unique needs, values, and vision for wellness.

Here’s how to set health goals that align with your body and lifestyle, using a functional medicine approach.

Reflect on the Past Year

Before looking ahead and creating new health goals, take a moment to reflect back. What worked for your health this year? What didn’t? Reflection helps identify patterns, successes, and areas that need extra attention and support. Ask yourself:

  • Did I feel energized most days?
  • How was my sleep quality?
  • Did I prioritize nutrition and movement?
  • What signs did my body give me about my health (fatigue, digestive issues, hormonal changes)?

Focus on Root-Cause Health Goals

In functional medicine, we aim to address the root cause of symptoms rather than just managing them and this applies to creating intentional health goals too! Apply this mindset to your health goals by asking “why” for each one.

For example:

– Instead of “I want to lose weight,” try “I want to balance my hormones and improve metabolism.”  (which will help with weight loss by the way!)

– Instead of “I’ll work out more,” try “I want to move my body to support my energy and reduce stress.”

Addressing the root cause when creating intentional health goals make them more specific, meaningful, and actionable.

Choose Goals That Are SMART

Transform vague resolutions into clear goals using the SMART framework:

  • Specific: Focus on clear, detailed outcomes.
  • Measurable: Include metrics to track progress.
  • Achievable: Start with small, manageable changes.
  • Relevant: Align your goals with your current needs and priorities.
  • Time-Bound: Set a realistic timeline for achieving them.

Example: “I will eat a nutrient-dense breakfast with protein, healthy fats, and greens at least 5 days a week for the next 3 months.”

Prioritize Progress Over Perfection

Health isn’t an “all or nothing” journey. Give yourself grace for setbacks and celebrate small wins. Each step forward—no matter how small—brings you closer to your goals.  I approach health with an 80/20 mindset – if we can do well 80% of the time, this leaves 20% for celebrations, vacations or even just busy, hectic weeks where things aren’t perfect. This allows for sustainability of habits. And also, we should prioritize habits that align with our lifestyle and create health in the process. Adhering to strict, unenjoyable diets or workout regimens is not a recipe for success or joy. Find things that you love to do, love to eat and love to practice that can make maintaining health enjoyable and not a chore.

Support Your Goals with Functional Medicine Strategies

Use evidence-based approaches to support your progress:

  • Optimize Nutrition: Focus on whole, unprocessed foods rich in nutrients.
  • Balance Your Blood Sugar: Include protein, healthy fats, and fiber in meals.
  • Address Underlying Issues: Work with a practitioner (like me!!) to assess gut health, hormone balance, or nutrient deficiencies.
  • Prioritize Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of restorative sleep each night.
  • Manage Stress: Incorporate mindfulness practices like yoga, journaling, or meditation.

Find Your ‘Why’

Understanding *why* your health goals matter to you is the fuel that keeps you going. Creating intentional health goals is one thing, finding the why behind them is going to help you stay committed. Maybe it’s being present and active with your family, pursuing a passion, or simply feeling vibrant and well. Write down your “why” and revisit it often.

Build a Support System

Accountability is key to success. Share your goals with a trusted friend, family member, or practitioner who can cheer you on and help you stay on track.  Include your family or friends in your health goals. Health is more fun and easier to stick to when the whole family is involved!
