Hair Loss in Your 30s: 7 Root Causes Often Missed

Have you been noticing more hair in your brush, shower drain, or ponytail? Hair loss in your 30s is surprisingly common, but it’s not something you should simply accept as normal.

While genetics can play a role, many women experience hair thinning due to underlying imbalances that often go unrecognized. I always tell patients – our body views hair as a luxury. What I mean is, if you are stressed, undernourished, missing key nutrients, or your thyroid is slightly off your body pulls resources elsewhere and your hair suffers. That is why it is important to do a deep dive into the MANY triggers of hair loss and not just get a bottle of nutrafol and wish for the best. Let’s talk root causes…

Low Iron Stores

Even when your hemoglobin or red blood cell count is normal, low ferritin aka iron storage levels can contribute to hair shedding. Normal does not mean optimal and I see women every week with suboptimal stores and once optimized, shedding slows significantly! Women with heavy menstrual cycles and endurance athletes are especially at risk. Get a full iron panel!

Thyroid Dysfunction

Hair loss is one of the most common signs of an underactive thyroid or hypothyroidism. A complete thyroid panel provides more insight than TSH alone. And similarly to ferritin, a normal TSH doesn’t mean the thyroid is functioning optimally.

Blood Sugar Imbalances

Frequent energy crashes, cravings, and insulin resistance can disrupt healthy hair growth by triggering inflammation. Keeping your blood sugar off the roller coaster is key to healthy hair growth. Think protein, fat and fiber with every meal.

Chronic Stress

This one is huge. Elevated cortisol can shift hair follicles into a shedding phase, often causing noticeable hair loss several months after a stressful event. This can mean physical or emotional stress. COVID and other viral illnesses trigger stress on the body and can trigger shedding months after being ill. And I hate to say it but all the boss lady’s, busy moms and type A go-go-goers that never slow down aren’t do any favors to their hair follicles. Weaving in mindfulness techniques and slowing down (I know, easier said than done) can really help.

Nutrient Deficiencies

We talked about iron but the hair also requires other nutrients to grow luscious locks. Low zinc, vitamin D, and B vitamins can all affect hair growth. In addition, low protein or calorie restriction will also keep critical nutrients away from the hair follicle so a top priority is working on nourishing our bodies! This is part of the issue with GLP-1s – lower appetite, calorie restriction and not getting enough nutrients will cause lots of shedding. There is definitely a time and a place for these medications but it requires diligent nutrition to make sure you don’t lose hair (and muscle!!).

Hormonal Changes

Declining progesterone, estradiol as well as elevated or declining androgens, can trigger more shedding. Another time of time when see big periods of hair loss is during the postpartum hormone shifts that are so drastic. We can support hormone levels during these times and consider hormone replacement therapy if appropriate!

Gut Health Issues

Poor digestion, dysbiosis, increased intestinal permeability and inflammation can reduce nutrient absorption, making it difficult to support healthy hair growth. We need digestion + absorption of nutrients for optimal hair growth.

The Functional Medicine Approach to Hair Loss

Rather than simply treating symptoms or throwing some spironolactone at it, functional medicine looks for the underlying factors contributing to hair loss that are unique to each patient. Comprehensive testing can help uncover nutrient deficiencies, hormone imbalances, thyroid dysfunction, and metabolic concerns.
