What’s the Deal with Food Dyes? A Mom’s Guide to Food Coloring

As a functional medicine practitioner and a fellow mom, I know how colorful snacks can catch a child’s eye (and honestly, make them beg for that neon-blue slushy or rainbow colored gummies). They look so fun, why wouldn’t they?! But have you ever wondered what’s behind those vibrant hues? It’s pretty well discussed that there are a few camps when it comes to food dyes. There’s the “it’s only a little artificial coloring” and the “my child is a different human after they have products with food dye” and another maybe somewhere in the middle. I happen to fall into the avoid dyes whenever possible camp. Let’s dive into the truth about artificial food dyes and their impact on health.

What Are Food Dyes?

Artificial food dyes are synthetic chemicals added to foods, drinks, and even medications to make them more visually appealing. Common ones include Red3, Red 40, Yellow 5, and Blue 1 —ingredients found in everything from candies to cereals.

The Problem with Dyes

Research has raised concerns about artificial dyes, especially when consumed regularly:

      1. Behavioral Concerns: Studies have linked food dyes to hyperactivity in children, particularly those with ADHD. The European Union requires a warning label on products with certain dyes due to these concerns, while the U.S. does not.  I can tell when my oldest has had something with red dye in it, her level of activity is accelerated as if she has been given jet fuel!
      2. Allergies and Sensitivities: Red 40 and Yellow 5 have been known to cause reactions like rashes, hives, or even headaches in sensitive individuals.  The hard part is most people don’t avoid these and they are in everything. They may not realize the symptoms they are causing!
      3. Gut Health Disruption: Many dyes are petroleum-based and can disrupt the gut microbiome—a critical factor for overall health and immunity. More on gut health HERE!
      4. Possible Carcinogens: Some dyes, like Red 3, have been linked to cancer in animal studies, sparking calls for stricter regulations. Red 3 recently made headlines that the FDA finally will have it removed from food products (it has been removed from cosmetic products for years due cancer causing concerns. If putting it on the skin is not good, how could eating it be any better!)

Where Are They Hiding?

Food dyes show up in surprising places, like “healthy” yogurts, granola bars, and sports drinks. Always check the ingredient list for terms like “Red 40” or “Yellow 5.”  Though, it has been reported that manufacturers are getting smarter and plan to call them by different names soon to trick consumers. Ugh!

Better Alternatives

Thankfully, nature provides plenty of beautiful, safe alternatives! Look for products colored with beet or veggie juices, turmeric, spirulina, or paprika extract. Many brands now offer dye-free versions of kid-friendly snacks.  Opt for these! Even better, opt for REAL WHOLE foods so you don’t have to worry about any additives!

A Mom’s Take

As a mom, I’ve seen the difference cutting out food dyes can make—fewer meltdowns, improved focus, and overall calmer kids. As a health practitioner, I know these changes support long-term well-being.  This isn’t to say my kids (and myself) never have things with dyes but at home we try to avoid these whenever possible and try to minimize them when out and about as well!
