Top 10 Healthy Travel Tips for Spring Break
Spring break is a time to relax and recharge, but travel can also bring stress, fatigue, and immune challenges. With a functional medicine approach, you can keep your family feeling their best while enjoying your trip – but also not stressing so much. Here are my top 10 healthy travel tips for Spring Break so that you stay healthy on the go!
- Boost Your Immune System: Take vitamin C, zinc, and probiotics before and during travel to support immunity. Try to get plenty of sleep prior to travel to keep your immune system functioning at its best!
- Stay Hydrated: Bring a reusable metal or glass water bottle and add electrolytes to combat dehydration, especially if flying or traveling to warmer climates.
- Pack Healthy Snacks: Keep blood sugar stable with protein-rich snacks like nuts or trail mix, jerky, and protein bars to avoid relying on processed foods.
- Support Digestion: Travel can disrupt gut health. Take a probiotic, eat fiber-rich foods, and stay hydrated to prevent bloating or constipation. Magnesium can be a great supplement to take with to keep you regular and help with sleep while traveling! (*always ask your provider if any new supplement is right for you!)
- Prioritize Sleep: Adjust to new time zones by getting morning sunlight, using an eye mask, and cutting out the screen before sleep to set your circadian rhythm to the new time zone!
- Move Daily: Long flights and car rides can cause stiffness. Stretch, walk often, and choose active excursions to keep moving. Walk on the beach to find seashells with the kids or how about some family races or games in the pool to get everyone moving! If your spring break involves skiing in the mountains you’ll likely be getting plenty of exercise but if you are more of a hang in the lodge type rather than zoom down the slops – get out and try cross country skiing or snowshoeing as a less speed intensive alternative!
- Minimize Toxins: Use a travel water filter, choose whole foods over processed options, get plenty of protein and fiber, stay hydrated and bring non-toxic sunscreen and personal care products.
- Regulate Stress: Vacation should be relaxing – maybe not with kids :). What’s the sayin? Vacation is just parenting in a different location. Either way, vacation should be fun for everyone and shouldn’t be stressful the entire time. Practice mindfulness, deep breathing, or meditation to stay calm and centered while managing travel logistics and changes to the families routines.
- Practice Safe Sun Exposure: Get natural early morning sunlight for vitamin D but avoid burns with mineral-based sunscreen and protective clothing when the sun is at its peak! My favorite mineral based sunscreen is EltaMD!
- Give Yourself Grace: Travel isn’t about perfection. Focus on small, healthy choices and enjoy the experience with your family. Not everything will go perfectly but vacation is a good opportunity to let go and give yourself some grace and enjoy the experience – whatever it may bring.
With these simple strategies, you can keep your family healthy, energized, and ready to make the most of spring break. I hope you enjoyed my top 10 healthy travel tips for spring break!
